The price of conforming

The conformity demanded by our modern society ( governments, workplaces, disposable relationships, families and some cultures ) is like Procrustes Bed in Greek Mythology.

Travelers on their way to Athens would be placed on this bed. If they were too short they were stretched to fit, as on a medieval torture rack, if they were too tall, they were merely cut down to size.

Some fit the bed perfectly, they find ease and pleasure in succeeding. However conformity to these stereotypes is often an agonising process for a man or woman whose archetypal patterns differ from what he or she ‘should be’.

They may appear to fit, but in truth they have cut important parts of themselves off to ‘ look the part’ and simply stay on the road.

Or they may have stretched one dimension of their personality to fit expectations but lacks depth and complexity, which often makes outer success inwardly meaningless.

Traveler’s who pass through the Procrustean ordeal to reach their version of Athens may have wondered wether it had been worthwhile, as contemporary men and women often do after they ‘ arrive’.

Success in these circumstances can be as empty as a politicians promise - fittingly.

Joseph Campbell the extraordinary author and teacher on mythology and sociology rightly said of modern man - “that he dies a small part each day as he enters the subway.”

If of course, he is not “ following his bliss”.

So what’s to be done, the first thing I feel is most certainly do not expect leadership from anyone in power ( governments, corporations, banks, school principals )or such, as they are unconscious to your needs, desires, beliefs or interests.

This is a private matter and one as Joseph Campbell himself would call ‘ the heroes journey’ , it’s aptly named as it requires extraordinary internal courage and resolve to pursue what is genuinely important to you, and is fraught with danger to one’s economic, emotional, mental and sociological states when it meets the established energy of powerful institutions.

These are callings that tend to ‘ happen ‘ to us instead of being a planned journey, much like Frodo and the ring.

How do you know that your journey has begun, well life is a wonderful mirror, and life’s events and experiences including relationships will show you via your contentment and happiness how far off the path to Athens that you have strayed.

New perspectives are required, that’s partially our role in therapeutic settings.

But ultimately, the true inner guidance will come from within you which is the goal of therapy, and intuition, honouring both feeling functions and rational functions, not continually making excuses for those around you who are a poor fit for your happiness etc all play a part.

The ‘System ‘ that we battle has not been nefariously set up to thwart your desires or achievements, it has been set up by people for whom it is a good fit.

The power that these systems generate has taken us to a point whereby they have institutionalised methods of annihilating non compliance with ever more complex punishments.

The Covid-19 response is one of histories greatest failures in this regard. This ignorance ( or Ignore-rance ) of governments regarding the truth and ultimately the health of populations is simply criminal.

I treated a client in her 70’s this week who had had seizures within a day of the jabs. No one in her medical system was allowed to acknowledge her plight.

Her future now is quite uncertain.

It is a system though when understood, honours soulless power, profit and ultimately greed over true human nature.

It is a system that knows the difference between a scorpion and a frog.

And for people who seek personal achievement and soulful meaning over power and prestige, they can find themselves in a situation where success is more dangerous than failure.

Trapped in a glittering world without music.

I reached this place in corporate life, and I witnessed it in very very many colleagues and associates.

It is our creative potential to identify what in life actually nourishes us and to pursue it. When even a small amount of focus lands on your souls truest paths, often an enormous burst of energy arrives with it, a reservoir of light in a grey psychological landscape.

Understanding the source of this energy is also part of my role and helping you towards your Athens.

A fast track is to help where your body has stored these trials and tribulations, resistances within tensions, congestion and illness.

This is essential to help clear the path for sustainable recovery, development and growth.

The moral of the story is that confirming to others will, on any level, should be undertaken with a clear and conscious approach.

Humans are not particularly spiritually built to be controlled and the outcomes of such actions will invariably lead to misery.
